The remains of Chile's former President named Salvador Allende were unearthed in a bid in order to determine whether the former leader had committed suicide or had been murdered.

The official version isthat Allende had shot himself in the presidential palace as General Augusto Pinochet's forces has closed in on him in the 1973 coup.

But as his death had never been formally investigated, some had believed that the military had killed him and then had covered up the crime.

Over 3,000 political opponents had been killed or "disappeared" by the military.

The Allende case is one of the 726 suspected rights abuses that the investigators have been looking into.

With the blessings of Allende family's, a judge had launched a panel of Chilean and foreign forensic experts that would try to clarify the circumstances surrounding the late president's death.

The unearthening had taken place on early Monday morning.
