Princess Beatrice’s fashion-forward hat –- that pink pretzel she wore to the royal wedding -- has sold on eBay for more than $130,000.(£81,101)
Beatrice wore the Philip Treacy creation for the wedding of her cousin Prince William to Kate Middleton last month, following which she decided to auction off the accessory to raise money for both UNICEF and Children in Crisis.
Since then, it has been compared to antlers and a pretzel, and has been photoshopped into scores of unlikely scenarios on the Internet.
Other royal-watchers compared the creation to a toilet seat and it has inspired its own Facebook page, "Princess Beatrice's ridiculous royal wedding hat", which has a following of more than 143,000 people.
She commented on the auction page: "I've been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted," she states on the auction posting. "It's a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have."
The hat had around 724,000 views and 94 bids, and set a new record for the sale of a designer hat on eBay. At one point Australian children's band The Wiggles were the highest bidders. However eBay did not reveal the identity of the winner.
Dragons Den star Duncan Bannatyne kicked off proceedings with a £5,000 bid within minutes of the hat being put up for auction, last week.He told The Mail: 'For once I don’t mind if I don’t walk away with the deal.'
