An Italian toddler had died after she was left in a hot car by her father who had neglected to drop her off at day care.
Doctors in the city of Ancona had pronounced the 22-month-old dead, three days after the father had returned from work to find her hardly breathing in his car.
The man, who is a professor of veterinary medicine, informed the investigators that he had strangely thought that he had dropped her off at a nursery on the way to work.
Prosecutors are to decide whether to charge him with her death.
The mother who had appealed for understanding for her partner.
She informed the Italian media that what had happened to him "could have happened to anyone".
"I want to shout to the entire world how much my companion loved his daughter. He is an exemplary father," stated the mother, who is eight months pregnant with their next child.
