The woman Strauss Kahn tried to rape is a 32 year old devout Muslim, who was wearing a head scarf or Hijab. The woman has a 15-year-old daughter and is from Guinea, she is widowed and received asylum in the United States 7 years ago.

Strauss Kahn, a former French minister, who had been expected to declare his candidacy for the French presidency soon tried to rape the 32 year Muslim woman. France is the same country where French Muslims are treated as second-class citizens. Under the law promoted by Nicolas Sarkozy, French President any Muslim woman wearing a face veil is now banned from all public places in France.

The fact that Strauss Kahn tried to rape a Muslim women who wore a headscarf is not just a coincidence but also his lack of respect and contempt for Muslims and Muslim women. He probably thought that the rape victim being a Muslim woman will not tell anyone and He could get away with it!

The nuance to this story is not only that France is an open society when it comes to extramarital affairs but also a closed society that treats its Muslims immigrants with contempt, and this highlights lack of respect for Muslims by the French ruling elite.

I feel pure contempt for Dominique Strauss Khan not only as woman but as a Muslim woman.

Amra, since the the object of the crime is a Muslim woman, I think her attacker Strauss Khan shall be dealt with according to Islamic criminal Law, the case shall be filed in an Islamic court. Am not a lawyer but, my analysis on the matter goes that way. Probably, fellow contributor writers who have expertise on Islamic jurisprudence can render their opinions on the case. After reading this article it reminds me about a documentary "Muslim Women: The Bill & Us" which explores the politics behind the reservation of Muslim women in politics. Political leaders nearly all men are having some different point of view over women right. That's why there is huge opposition for the women reservation bill. Some Muslim men believe that if women are attending Parliament they should attend in Purdah but women are against of this specially Dalit and backward caste women.

While if the accusations are true which are disgusting, let us not forget in the U.S. the system assumes innocence until proven guilty by a jury of his peers. This is what makes the American system strong.

The French are pretty snobbish to everyone. Your point about how the French treat Muslims has some validity because they choose not to take any Libyan and Tunisian refugees that are stuck in Lampedusa, Italy. Hijab is OK, the burqa is not.

In America, a rape is a rape regardless what the religious affiliation might be. In a sense it is racist to use that information in the States. It is irrelevant to the incident.

yes but DSK is a French guy committing a crime in America!!! he thinks of Muslims as weak and like slaves/second class citizens in France, that is how they are treated. The salient point is DSK is bringing his French prejudices to the US and thinking he can get away with raping a Head-scarfed Black African Muslim woman, who most likely won't tell anyone.

Thank you Amra Tareen for this eye opener update. Rape is a rape, it has nothing doing with race or creed. If you look at statistic of rape in Muslim countries, how may are reported or taken to court, very very minute number. At least victim of rape will get justice in USA, at least in this case nobody is above the law.

I agree logicalreasoning. Rape in many Muslim countries go on punished including honor killings. We suffer with it in Israel among the some of the Muslim population. It is so painful to see these women abused just because of the patriarchal system of control and power.At least in the USA justice for the most part is based on actions not religion.In Israel when these situations come to light the culprits are prosecuted.

All Thanks for you comments, I appreciate them, but the point is this guy is part of French ruling elite, he is a predator, he goes after what he considers weak and helpless..... women, Muslim woman as he thinks they are weak as they a covered and have no rights!.... what bothers me is that he raped a young french journalist, whose own mother told her not to prosecute him???

My hats go off to this woman in Manhattan who is a shy Muslim woman, 32 year old widowed woman with a 15 year old daughter, living in Bronx is in the US for 7 years. She is very courageous and I applaud her!!

But this Strauss did not realize that this is America and his power does not apply here!!!

It appears that there is enough evidence to charge Khan, but he has a high priced lawyer and even if found guilty, may not get more than slap on the wrist.The rich and powerful often take advantage of the disadvantaged with impunity. From his reputation, Khan seems to have been nondiscriminatory in whom he victimized. It appears that whoever was handy at the time became his victim.And we have to remember that he is still presumed innocent of the charges until proven guilty.

I learned about the French disrespect for the Muslims in an Intercultural Communications Class. There is a movie about the scarf issue that I watched in class but I can't remember the name. It made me very emotional. I think it is horrific. Thanks Amra -- excellent report.

I think you approach dangerous territory when you head towards declaring one rape worse than another. A rape is a rape, whether it is a Muslim, Catholic or atheist. Rape victims frequently face questions about how they got themselves in difficulty. In a highly publicized case in Texas, a teen girl who was gang raped by 18 boys and men was criticized by residents of the area where she was attacked for being there. I.E., she was looking for trouble. I fear that even mentioning that the victim in this case is a Muslim could result in her own people blaming her. An Arizona Muslim man was sentenced to prison this year for the honor killing of his daughter.

All I am saying is that DSK is a predator and he knows this very well and he thought he would not get caught in this situation as the woman had a hijab on! it is like raping a slave, masters can get away with it
