According to sources, the number of cases reported of Measles is increasing in California, hinting towards a possible outbreak. Average number of measles cases reported every year in U.S is 50; however, in 2011 nearly 100 cases have been reported. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have brought this number to everyone’s attention. Most of these cases are linked to people travelling from other countries.
Health officials have reported that measles outbreaks are occurring in Europe, Asia and Africa. In France, 9000 cases of measles have been reported in the last six months that also included fatal cases in which the patients lost their lives or fell into neurological complications. Currently, India, Philippines and many of the European countries are facing outbreaks.
Many of the patients of measles are likely to have been exposed to the disease to others who have recently traveled to areas affected by the disease. Measles is a highly contagious disease. Five cases in Florida are being associated with an international helicopter trade show which was held in Orlando. Three more cases in Florida are being attributed to have been caught by a traveler who had been to India. In Utah, almost nine cases reported of measles were linked to someone infected in Poland. Similarly, twenty one cases in Minnesota have been traced back to a child who developed the symptoms after a trip to Kenya.
According to the Deputy Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the California Department of Public Health, “California, like the rest of the nation and, indeed, the world, is experiencing an increase in measles cases that is entirely preventable with immunization.”
Health officials in California have become alarmed due to the recent seven new cases reported in April. Statewide total for measles is now 13 cases for the year toll now.
Common symptoms of measles include a fever, runny nose, cough, sore eyes and a red rash all over the body. According to sources, one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia. Measles can be a serious illness that in many cases, would require hospital medical treatment.
