WASHINGTON: Osama bin Laden is dead and his body has been recovered by US authorities, US officials said on Sunday night. US President Barack Obama was to make the announcement shortly that after searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead.

Al Jazeera correspondent says operation took place near Abbottabad and that helicopters circled the compound where bin Laden was reportedly hiding.

A senior Pakistani intelligence official confirmed on Monday that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks, had been killed. “Yes, I can confirm that,” he said, but declined to give further details, according to Reuters.

Pak Army Helicopter crashes in Abbotabad

Helicopter crashes in Abbotabad area

An army chopper has crashed PMA Road in the Sikandarabad area of Abbotabad. No casualties have been reported as of yet and security forces have cordoned the crash site.

The chopper was on its routine flight when it crashed one kilometer away from PMA, Kakul in an empty plot.

A fire broke out in chopper after the crash and firefighters were busy trying to extinguish blaze.

Security forces had cordoned off the area, with media personnel and civilians barred from entering the area.

Witnesses disclosed that there were two helicopters, one of which crashed to the ground. The cause of the crash is as yet unknown.

ISPR has issued no statement so far about the incident.

Obama confirms Osama killed in Islamabad Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani security official on Monday told AFP that he could confirm Osama bin Laden had been killed in a “highly sensitive intelligence operation”, but provided no immediate further details.

“Yes I can confirm that he was killed in a highly sensitive intelligence operation,” the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The official said he was unable to immediately confirm where, how or when bin Laden was killed.

Asked whether Pakistani intelligence participated in the operation he said only: “It was a highly sensitive intelligence operation.”

US television network quoted sources as saying that bin Laden was killed in an operation based on actionable US intelligence targeting a mansion outside Islamabad.
