, a well-liked and famous Christian pastor, died in a car accident Wednesday in east Texas. According to authorities, David Wilkerson, author of “The Cross and the Switchblade”, and his wife were driving on the Neches River Bridge, Highway 175, when an 18-wheeler trailer hit their car head-on. The accident reportedly occurred because Wilkerson moved his car into the opposite lane.
Authorities stated that the driver of the trailer saw the car and made efforts to give way to it; however, the trailer crashed with the pastor’s car. The wife of Wilkerson, 79, and another person, identified as the driver of the trailer, were injured in the accident.
David Wilkerson reportedly died on the spot, while his wife, Gwen Wilkerson, and trailer driver were carried to the hospital in critical conditions. The Neches River Bridge was also damaged in the accident, reports say.
“It is with deepest of sadness that we have to inform you of the sudden passing of Reverend David Wilkerson, our founding pastor,” Times Square Church Senior Pastor Carter Conlon said in a statement on the official website of the Church.
Pastor Wilkerson was the founder of World Christian Ministries and the Times Square Church, New York City. According to CBN, the Times Square Church founded by Wilkerson has enlisted more than 8000 members to date.
It should be noted that Wilkerson cautioned people about economic crumple and unrest in NYC in 2009. Moreover, he warned about “fires” as extreme case after “economic collapse” and “riots”. The message delivered by David Wilkerson garnered much attention in 2009 and the years that followed.
Wilkerson was held more credible and reliable by followers in comparison to other pastors and Christian leaders. His fame and credibility augmented when the pastor published his famous book “The Cross and the Switchblade”. Wilkerson’s book was ranked 32 on the Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals list of Christianity Today.
Pastor Wilkerson’s last blog post was titled “When All Means Fail”. In the blog post, the late pastor gives confidence and courage to people suffering in life.
“To those going through the valley and shadow of death, hear this word: Weeping will last through some dark, awful nights, and in that darkness you will soon hear the Father whisper, ‘I am with you,’” Wilkerson wrote in his last blog post. “Beloved, God has never failed to act but in goodness and love. When all means fail-his love prevails. Hold fast to your faith. Stand fast in his Word. There is no other hope in this world,” Wilkerson added.
