Before You Buy a Bed Pillow

Undeniably, a down comforter is superbly soft, cloudlike, cozy and warm. Due to breathable insulation of eider downs, it is warm during winter and cool during summer. Indeed it is nice to invest in down comforters. However, how sure are you that what you buy will last for years?

Two important things must be your foremost consideration. First is the down itself. The weight fill is not necessarily a good indication of the quality of the down comforter. A down comforter may be filled with different types of feathers. A cheaper down comforter might have down mixed with top feathers.

A down comes from the curly and fluffy undercoat without central quill. It is a layer of fine feathers under the tougher exterior feathers of birds. Top feathers or the knottier surface feathers add to weight with hard central quill distracting the softness and thermal properties of the down.

A down feather is characterized by its splendid lofting and insulation attributes. It can also be packed into a very small space. Clusters of down feathers efficiently form insulated pockets that hold in heat while allowing air to pass. For proper distribution of clusters, baffles are sewn into the quilt.

The thermal property of down feathers is evaluated by fill power. Fill power is measured by the number of cubic inches filled by a given ounce of down. The higher fill power is better than a low fill power of the same weight.

The second important thing to consider in buying a down comforter is the quality of the fabric. Cotton is soft and cool to the skin and matches well with down fills. Fabrics of 100% cotton are higher quality than polyester. To effectively contain the down, it is best to select the down framework with higher thread count.

Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the finer is the quality of the fabric. Good quality fabric starts with 200 thread count. Thread count must not exceed 380 to avoid leakage because the fabric becomes too fine. The highest thread count in the United States is 310. European fabrics go much better.

Low thread count fabrics are not tightly weaved thus allow the down to escape through the tiny holes. One important factor is the type of weave. They say that Italians are good weavers.

Finally, choose a down comforter bearing in mind the quality of the down. The fill power and baffle construction are very important and of course the type of fabric. Overall the warmth factor suitable to the different seasons and temperature ranges. Down comforters pervade a sense of luxury, warmth and well-being.
