A human rights group says a 13-year-old Yemeni girl has died of injuries to her genitals four days after a family-arranged marriage.

Ilham Mahdi al Assi, 13, was married to a man almost twice her age by their parents. The girl died died last Friday in a hospital in Yemen's Hajja province. It is reported that the teen girl took part in traditional culture called swap marriage”, in which the brother of the bride also married the sister of the groom.

The medical report shows that the Yemeni bride died of internal bleeding from genital and anal area due to sexual activity. According to her mother she was raped by her husband which was a cause of her death. Elhan’s death is far from an isolated incident in Yemen

The death of Ilham Madhi al Assi from injuries caused by sexual activity is being the latest argument against the practice of the legality forcing young girls to get married in Yemen.

Oh no ,for crying out loud, this to me is so immoral and so sad,How could anyone do this to such a young child. For a child to die because of such injuries is not okay in my opinion.Yet some profess to be so holy while commiting such atrocities on kids.What will they do with the husband?

I feel this kind of thing should stop.

this is the most awful thing I have ever heard of! She is just a baby - what kind of a monster would do this and to not be arrested for it? I am sickened to the core by this story - God bless that poor child at least she is in a better place now

Shocking! Take away her culture. Take away her nationality and all her trimmings, she's nothing more than an innocent 13-year child. Is rape or murder a part of their swapping tradition? Incarcerate the culprit!
