The U.S. Supreme Court building

Tucson will be affected by a recent favorable ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in preserving Arizona’s school voucher program that is funded by tax credits offered to state taxpayers.

Opponents of the school voucher system had filed a lawsuit claiming the $500 tax credit that can be used by all Arizona taxpayers and designed to help pay for private education violates the First Amendment which prohibits the government from establishing any religion in the United States. It is claimed that most of the students using the vouchers attend religious schools.

The Supreme Court ruled that taxpayers couldn’t sue based on a general First Amendment complaint but rather needed to show specific individual harm.
