In one of the most entertaining slugfests of the year, Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz (25-7, 1 NC) retained his belt by knocking out Phil "Semtex" Daley (27-10-2) with five seconds remaining in the first round at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
This rollercoaster ride of a fight began with Daley gaining the advantage with a solid left hook that knocked Diaz down. Diaz was able to get back up and create space with his jab. Diaz then was able to find his range with solid combinations.
Daley was hurt by the barrage of punches and began looking for a takedown. Diaz went into guard as his attempt for a guillotine choke failed. Both fighters got back to their feet after trading a few punches in the guard. Diaz began to clip Daley with a few more punches.
Diaz was then able to get into a clench and land a few more punches alongside the cage. Daley was able to circle off of the cage, and they began brawling right in the middle of the cage. With about 1:30 left in the round, Daley struck Diaz with a monster left hook that knocked him down. However, the chin of Diaz withstood the onslaught.
Diaz was able to pull guard even though Daley landed a solid hammer fist to the chest. Diaz' jiujitsu kicked in and he was able to regain his senses. After they both got back up to their feet, Diaz landed a barrage of punches that left Daley rather woozy. Then, Diaz went in for the kill and obtained the knockout.
