RAINN: The Secret (short)

Yesterday the shocking news broke that actress Ashley Judd is the survivor of a brutal rape -- an event that took place when she was just a child.

The actress has decided to open up about her experience inAll That Is Bitter & Sweet, her new memoir that reveals an extremely difficult childhood. When Ashley Judd was a child living in Kentucky, she was lured into an empty building by a stranger who said he was going to give her a quarter for a pinball machine. Sadly, this was one of the first of many sexual assaults she endured, and she’s not alone when it comes to being a celebrity rape victim.

In fact, many celebrity rape victims were very also young when they were attacked.

Actress Anne Heche wrote about her own experiences in her book Call Me Crazy, where she claimed that her father raped her when she was just an infant. Heche even discusses her father giving her herpes when she was a baby (her mother simply believed she had bad diaper rash, but Anne said she suffered from the STD when she was 8 years old).

Teri Hatcher was also raped by a family member when she was just a child -- her uncle raped her for several years starting when she was just five years old. She decided to come forward with her story when she discovered that her uncle had also raped a 14-year-old girl who later committed suicide. In 2002, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping the teen.

One of the biggest celebrities in the world, Orpah, has also come forward to talk about her sexual abuse. The talk show host was raped by a cousin when she was just nine years old.

Singer Fiona Apple was raped when she was twelve by a stranger in her mother’s apartment building, and “American Idol” star Fantasia Barrino revealed in her memoir, Life is Not a Fairy Tale, that she was raped at school when she was in the ninth grade. Pamela Anderson was also raped when she was a teen (she was still a virgin at the time).

Actress Gabrielle Union was raped at age 19 while working at a shoe store -- a gunman forced Gabrielle and one of her coworkers into a back room when she was closing the shop. She later said that an episode of Oprah helped her handle the situation, and she even managed to grab the gun at one point. Gabrielle was beat badly in a struggle over the weapon before her rapist fled (he later turned himself in to police).

Mackenzie Phillips was also raped at age 19 -- but her attacker was her own father, Mamas & the Papas frontmanJohn Phillips.

But female celebrity rape victims aren’t the only ones that have spoken out about their abuse -- director Tyler Perryappeared on Oprah to talk about being raped as child, stating that he was abused by multiple people, including male and female family members.

So Ashley Judd isn’t alone when it comes to celebrities struggling with past sexual abuse, and perhaps the stars here telling their stories will help others, famous or otherwise, take the difficult step of coming forward with their own so that their abusers won’t get away with such horrific crimes.
