Biography: latest news about updates, Pop star Shakira has promised to help fight a new Arizona immigration law that makes it a crime to be in the state illegally.
The Colombian-born singer and UNICEF ambassador says the law goes against American ideals. Shakira, best known for her hit singles She Wolf, Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever said: ‘I came here to lend my voice and offer my support to the community and to express my public opposition on this law. In my opinion it dulls human and civil rights of citizens and non citizens. I am here as a Latina that believes in opportunity for all. We are concerned about the implementation of the law and the consequences it can have on the working families.’
The controversial law came into force in Arizona on April 23 sparking condemnation from civil rights groups saying it will lead to racial profiling. It even prompting a Mexican airline to cancel flights to the state.
Supporters of the law say it is needed to curb crime in the state, which is home to some 460,000 illegal immigrants and is a major corridor for drug and migrant smugglers from Mexico.
