Eman Al-Obeidi Charged with Slander by Men who Allegedly Raped her

Thousands of Libyans shout anti-government slogans in Benghazi

Slander charges have been filed against Eman Al-Obeidi by the men who allegedly abducted, tortured and raped her, the Libyan government announced.

The Benghazi woman made headlines when she barged into Western journalists' hotel Saturday to tell her story of two days of rape and torture at the hands of fifteen of Gadaffi's troops.

Her family held an engagement party for her as they attempted to show their love and support while hundreds of Benghazi women marched through the streets demanding her release Monday, in an unprecedented move.

Women who are raped have been villified, even beheaded or stoned to death, so the fact that Eman's family is showing support is extremely significant.

The Libyan government has changed their story regarding Eman repeatedly, at first calling her a drunk, then a prostitute, mentally ill, and a thief. She is, in fact, a law student, according to her friends and family.

Three more women, all lawyers, are also missing. According to Eman, they were detained with her.

The whereabouts of Eman Al-Obeidi and these women is unknown.

The Gadaffi government has failed to explain why this woman is being detained. Many fear that she has already been murdered, as the regime continues to silence even the smallest voice of truth that dares to speak out.

Thank you for this alarming report Michelle.

The fact that she is being held by Gaddafi as well as the other missing women, is suspect. Why would he hold her except to keep her quiet? Or if in fact she was killed, he doesn't want it to be known. This could be the final act for Gaddafi, if she has been harmed.

I wonder if the New York Times would publish a story quoting locals as saying this woman had been hanging around in the wrong areas and therefore put herself in a position to be raped?

yes Robert - just like they did regarding the 11 yr old girl who was gang raped - it is called 'rape culture' and it pervades every society. Maybe those men can sue the 11 yr old for slander too.

oh except no - they recorded the gang rape on their cell phones - guess not!

Yeah but did the police have search warrants when they took them? The law always seems to be on the side of the rapists. And you don't even have to be a basketball star!

you are so right there Robert, sad to say!

Oh yes, Michelle. I was watching on TV how she was being manhandled by Gaddafi supporters.
And, she put up a bold face, resisting and shouting against many men, the lonely girl that she was.
Rated up.

How can you file charges against a dead person?

Oh, I read that she was set free! As in freeing Her spirit from her body? Where is she then? I read that She was safely returned to her Family??? In a box? Produce Her safe and sound or be haunted by Her soul until it is your turn Gaddafi! I hope all the best for Her, and if She is missing one hair from Her head may the fires of Hell consume those who harm Her.
