Slander charges have been filed against Eman Al-Obeidi by the men who allegedly abducted, tortured and raped her, the Libyan government announced.
The Benghazi woman made headlines when she barged into Western journalists' hotel Saturday to tell her story of two days of rape and torture at the hands of fifteen of Gadaffi's troops.
Her family held an engagement party for her as they attempted to show their love and support while hundreds of Benghazi women marched through the streets demanding her release Monday, in an unprecedented move.
Women who are raped have been villified, even beheaded or stoned to death, so the fact that Eman's family is showing support is extremely significant.
The Libyan government has changed their story regarding Eman repeatedly, at first calling her a drunk, then a prostitute, mentally ill, and a thief. She is, in fact, a law student, according to her friends and family.
Three more women, all lawyers, are also missing. According to Eman, they were detained with her.
The whereabouts of Eman Al-Obeidi and these women is unknown.
The Gadaffi government has failed to explain why this woman is being detained. Many fear that she has already been murdered, as the regime continues to silence even the smallest voice of truth that dares to speak out.
