People waiting to flee Libya gather at the airport in the capital Tripoli

Libyan press has announced that Eman has now been freed, and is resting at home with her mother and sisters. She may be giving an interview to one or two female reporters, they promised. A Gadaffi spokesman has told foreign press that five men, one of whom may be the son of a top-ranking Police Officer, have been arrested in connection with the alleged beating, torture and rape of Eman Al-Obeidi. None of this can be confirmed by journalists, who are held captive in the hotel in Tripoli where the woman approached them Saturday. Her family, however, deny that this is true. In fact, they say, her sister Amal has also been detained. They received a phone call last night from a government spokesman at three a.m. offering them a new house, money, anything they wished as long as they retracted Eman's statement.

The Benghazi woman made headlines yesterday when she into a Tripoli hotel to tell journalists of her ordeal at the hands of men connected to Moammar Gadhafi.

According to the government spokesperson: "Her claims are being fully investigated and she has been given access to a lawyer."

Sky News:"Libya's deputy foreign minister confirms to the men have been detained as part of the investigation and says security staff "mishandled" the incident when al-Obeidi entered the hotel and police attempted to silence her. He also suggests the woman was attending a pre-arranged meeting with at least one of the men when the assault allegedly occurred; al-Obeidi claims she was picked up at a checkpoint. Sky News reports that it is "understood" the government is holding al-Obeidi as part of the investigation." Click for more background.

Why someone who had been subjected to such a trauma is now being 'held for the investigation' was not, apparently, made clear.

Recent tweets indicate that there are 3 other women missing, all lawyers, and that Eman mentioned them to the journalists when she burst in upon the morning breakfast at the Tripoli Hotel where they are kept.

Due to their track record, they are lying until proven otherwise.
Did Eman show up in front of the journalists after being released?
Is their any reason to believe what they said? Only yesterday and after being psychologically assessed by the government spokesperson she was declared a mental case, a drunk and a whore!!! Today she is suddenly sober, sane and not a whore ! She not only has been allegedly released but 5 people were arrested !!!
Those PR companies are really trying hard to put out a polished spin on thugs, however the regime is too crooked to be fixed. They have to GO; if you did not learn how to behave over 42 years you will expelled ....
Inshallah "God willing" today or tomorrow ...and I promise we will not shed a single tear.

yes quateen I agree it is very strange - also I just heard a completely conflicting report on CNN saying that Gadaffi's people are saying she is a prostitute who refused medical treatment - meanwhile she is actually a lawyer according to resistance tweeps...and three others are missing - women she says were with her and also attacked.

Great Job ... Eman and all the women that went thru something like this would surely also thank you...

I side note... just heard that the rebels have reached the city of Sirt...Gaddafi's days are numbered.

another point - so what if she were a prostitute (which she is not - she is a law student) but if she were-would that make a difference? Rape is rape
Reply By Write4Life Maryann Scarangello | about 1 year ago
Thank you .... that point is being lost in many news stories. Rape IS rape and it makes no difference if it occurs in Washington DC or Libya or Afghanistan or Canada.

That other cultures view it differently only shows how much further we need to go for the rights of women everywhere.

Even in America - women must unite. These atrocities against our sisters should NEVER be.

These shoes from MBT women boots seem just a little bigger than the typical footwear and some even come across them downright ugly.
