The two films will be filmed in 3D throughout New Zealand and at Stone Street Studios in Wellington over the next 14 months.

The cast includes some names already familiar with Middle Earth, including Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Andy Serkis(Gollum), and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel). Martin Freeman is set to star as Bilbo Baggins.

A number of the cast counting McKellen have been in Wellington for the last two months preparing for the films.

The primary film is set to be released in late 2012 with the second part following in 2013.
