My son, recently honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines, decided to take advantage of his G.I. Bill. He is living the dream in San Diego, CA, surfing, salsa dancing, and going to college.
Math has never been his subject of choice. Now he loves it because of the Khan Academy. He is getting 100% on his math tests due to using the teaching videos.
Khan Academy started off when Salman Khan began tutoring his cousins in math. To help them out, he started posting the concepts on YouTube.
His cousins told him they liked the videos more than his tutoring in person because they could pause and rewind as often as needed.
After Sal taught more math concepts using YouTube, other people started learning math from them, and giving him feedback like, "First time I smiled doing a derivative."
So he posted more mathematical concepts to learn, and teachers also started using them. The teachers would assign the videos as homework and then let the kids interact in class.
Soon Sal created a website and now millions of people use the free Khan Academy. Students, young and old can learn at their own pace, they can begin to enjoy math, and not go forward until they get each concept.
The student can become so proficient, no longer are they getting a 90%, now they can get 100% correct on their math assignments and tests because they finally understand the concepts.
