Nuclear authorities have warned that the Fukushima No. 1 plant, may be experiencing a nuclear meltdown"

There has been debate among experts as to whether the nuclear disaster unfolding in Japan will affect the United States. One thing most agree on is that wind direction and weather patterns will play a role in the extent of the spread of the disaster.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan last Friday forced Japanese officials to release radioactive steam into the atmosphere. The measure remains an effort to prevent a total meltdown of four damaged reactors and the subsequent release of massive amounts of radiation into the environment.

Elevated radiation levels have been reported as far away as Tokyo, 170 miles to the south of the troubled Fukushima Daiiachi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan.

"No citizen of any country can be assured that he or she can be protected from radioactive contamination. One nuclear reactor can pollute half the globe... Chernobyl fallout covers the entire Northern Hemisphere," according to data from the Russian Institutes of Radiation Safety.

While the toxicity of a radioactive cloud may be diluted on its journey across the Pacific Ocean, there is no guarantee that if and when it reaches the west coast of the United States that there will be no consequences.

Radiation from nuclear waste can remain in the environment for more than a 1,000 years.

http://www.nirond.be/engels/6.4_classificatie_eng.html "Category B and C waste, which contains significant quantities of radioelements of a half-life greater than 30 years, must be isolated from man and the environment for more than 300 years. The time needed for its activity level to decrease by at least a factor of 1,000 may indeed be several tens of thousands of years."

Is it apocalypse now? Could be. We better hope and pray

we are in uncharted territory. nothing like this has ever happened before but one would think it was coming sooner or later. we have no humility when it comes to the power of nature

Thanks for the report MaryAnn. This is getting scary now. I just heard the other day that we had nothing to worry about - and now look! I guess I better start stockpiling those iodide pills.

Well it's a little late to build a bomb shelter. But if you have an old one you might be able to rent it. You know. The one your dad built in case the reds decide to push the button down.

Thanks for sharing this, Mary Ann. I am not a nuclear scientist but my basic science teacher told me that radiation is composed of rays. As such, I am not sure if wind or cloud patterns have anything to do with it being transferred elsewhere. I don't want to worry too much about the nuclear thing because I might suffer from heart attack with it. lolzzz Rated up!

radiation is actually a general term. The danger is in the radioactive particulate matter that is picked up in the atmosphere: i.e. Chernobyl
Posted By DorothyMarieKucera Dorothy Marie Kucera | about 1 year ago
ABC's GMA News explained on Wed., 3.16.11, that with snow falling heavily in Japan today, IF it passes through the radioactive cloud above the nuclear reactors, it will carry those radioactive particles to the ground where it will be in the soil, in plants, in water, on surfaces and on people. They were advised to wash it off quickly or to prevent having it land on skin.

Rated up. I question the "1000 years," though, unless mSv are super high. I thought they said 100 years. Some people have returned to Chernobyl, planting gardens in the soil. Not sure that is wise. It has only been 25 years since that accident.

the exact time nuke waste remains is unclear - however, it is at least 1,000 years for some toxic elements. 20 miles around Chernobyl is still toxic today

i added a link for the bad news on how long nuke waste remains.

radioactive cesium has already reached the united Kingdom
Posted By Punditty Punditty | about 1 year ago
Day Star,

I read your report about cesium reaching the UK, and I do not see one solid reference at all in your report. Furthermore, I searched the Web for any form of confirmation for what you are alleging, and I see nothing to even hint that what you are saying is true.

It could be that you have inside information, and if so, thank you for passing the word to us. But if not, and you are just speculating or repeating rumors, that is a textbook case of fear-mongering. If you have Internet-based sources for your claims, please show us the links.

a lot of damage has already been done, but there are reports that they may be able to hook up an new power supply soon. Hopefully they will get it done in time to stop a complete meltdown. Stay tuned to itobin!

I also think people like Rush Limbaugh should be sacked immediately for saying that the Japanese people are a bunch of whiners and the quake/tsunami damage was an "exaggeration." The man is an idiot.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano had, at one point, said radiation levels near the stricken plant on the northeast coast reached as high as 400 millisieverts (mSv) an hour. That figure would be would be 20 times the annual exposure for some nuclear-industry employees and uranium miners.
- People are exposed to natural radiation of 2-3 mSv a year.
-a single one sievert (1,000 mSv) dose causes radiation sickness such as nausea, vomiting, hemorrhaging, but not death. Japan's radiation levels were less than 1/2 of that.
-"The possibility that the development of this accident (turns) into the one like in the Chernobyl accident is very unlikely," the Japanese agency chief said.
-Jean-Claude Brodovitch, a senior lecturer in nuclear chemistry at Simon Fraser University, said the main risk is from radioactive iodine, which has a very short half-life and would be very diluted if it was to travel here from Japan

it sounds to me that we are getting a lot of song and dance moves - but any radiation is still bad radiation. The low levels of radiation we get from ordinary life is what causes aging. Look it up, there's tons of research on it.

What a load of complete and utter nonsense!! I'm in Fukushima City and have been tested. Nothing wrong with my radiation level. Please get your facts right before spreading your vile filth and creating panic where panic is not needed.
So-called 'news' like this is, sadly, part of free-speech. What utter tripe you lot are talking!!

Any radiation is bad radiation ?? What do you do when you go to the dentist and need xrays, need xrays at the hospital, turn on your microwave, use your cell phone, your computer, your stereo, your tv, household radiator, electric heater, vacuum cleaner ?- Radioactive substances give off radiation; you better turn off your electricity, live in the dark and start eating RAW.
