Watch Rose Parade 2011:This is the week that my Pasadena becomes that Pasadena, home to the Rose Bowl and Rose Parade. RVs are beginning to line our streets, and soon thousands of people will be camping out in my neighborhood, awaiting the parade on New Year’s Day morning.
For now, though, the main activity is happening around the Rose Bowl itself, where hundreds of volunteers are working to decorate the floats for the 122nd annual Tournament of Roses parade.
A partly cloudy forecast and temperatures in the 50s are expected to greet the flowered floats, ponies and princesses that will roll down Colorado Boulevard in the 122nd Rose Parade, Presented by Honda, on New Year’s Day in Pasadena.
Food Network star and popular cookbook author will serve as grand marshal and 17-year-old Evanne Elizabeth Friedmann of La Canada is queen of the parade themed “Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories.”
Weather has dominated the leadup to the parade. Workers prepping floats and grandstands in Southern California have faced soaking conditions and, the East Coast blizzard made travel tough for participants, including a high school band that saw half of its members stranded in Philadelphia with fears they wouldn’t make it to the elite parade. But all 350 members of the Downingtown High School band are set to be in uniform on Saturday.
You can watch the replay of the Rose Parade 2011 on the Hallmark Channel at 1:00 p.m. ET just in case you missed it. The Rose Parade 2011 will be seen for over 200 international countries worldwide.
And it could possibly attract a million people that will line up the streets of Pasadena for the annual event. Many families begin lining the sidewalks of the parade route in the evening before the start of the parade in order to have a reserved spot for theRose Parade 2011.
Rose Parade will be having 40 of the most beautifully decorated floats that the people of Pasadena worked for. The Parade will be followed by Rose Bowl 2011 which TCU and Wisconsin will battle it out in the Rose Bowl of the college football season.
Some floats soar beyond the ceiling of the warehouse where they’re decorated. That, and the fact that the floats must pass under an Interstate 210 overpass along the route, mean that the tallest floats are built with hinges that allow them to lie flat(ter). That makes decorating a bit easier, too.
The most meta float in this year’s parade? Western Asset’s Rose Parade float paying tribute to… the Rose Bowl Stadium. Here, a volunteer applied detail to a floral representation of a Super Bowl program cover from one of the NFL title games held at the stadium.
Keep watching Theme Park Insider on New Year’s Day, when I’ll be posting a photo gallery of images taken from the parade, starting at the intersection of Colorado and Orange Grove Boulevards here in Pasadena. I’ll also be covering the parade live on Theme Park Insider’s Twitter feed.
“it’s just kind of a small donation up front they can use to create bigger events and then make our resources available to them”
According to the television schedule, the band will be featured within the first 15 minutes of the telecast.
The Kaiser Permanente float this year is entitled “Purrfectly Healthy,” and it presents a spectacular image of a momma cat and family practicing healthy eating and active living in a Victorian-inspired garden. The float aims to inspire people to make the lifestyle changes that can lead to better total health.
