An Open Letter to the Los Angeles Community Regarding Stolen “Banksy” Art

Today, Allvoices, a leading international news website broke with their tradition of not voicing editorial viewpoints and called upon US residents to "step up" and return a number of stolen works of art attributed to anonymous British graffiti artist, political activist, film director and painter Banksy.

In the letter (which appears below) Allvoices expresses their concern for the loss of several Banksy artworks that appeared in and around Los Angeles immediately prior to the Academy Awards where Banksy's film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" was up for an award in the "Best Documentary (Feature)" category.

A number of before and after photos taken at various locations around the Los Angeles area clearly show images attributed to Banksy while subsequent photos of the same locations document that this art has been removed and/or defaced.

Now recognized as a world famous artist, Banksy's pieces have been featured in exhibits and auctions with individual pieces being sold for many times their reserve prices. As these prices have escalated, thieves have taken it upon themselves to appropriate this art, frequently damaging structures and depriving the communities where the art was presented the opportunity to enjoy the creativity and interesting social and political commentary of one of today's most enigmatic artists.

The move today by Allvoices is clearly intended to shine a spotlight on what is happening to valuable public art with the goal of making the public aware of the situation while giving people the opportunity to do the right thing.

The Letter:

An Open Letter to the Los Angeles Community Regarding Stolen "Banksy" Art

Just before the Academy Awards a number of unique pieces of "graffiti" appeared in Los Angeles, San Diego and neighboring communities. A majority of this art was attributed to world-famous, anonymous British graffiti artist, political activist, film director and painter Banksy.

Unfortunately, much of this art was immediately removed and in most cases stolen from the private property where it was originally painted. Banksy's art has important social, political and cultural implications and we at Allvoices condemn the unauthorized removal or defacement of these valuable contributions to these communities.

We are calling upon the individual or individuals responsible for the theft of this art to come forward and return the art to its rightful owners - the communities that received these unique and spontaneous gifts.

Further, in an effort to support the arts and the cultural value provided when talented individuals like Banksy take it upon themselves to give such art to a community, Allvoices is offering to purchase these stolen pieces and subsequently put them on public display so that the world can enjoy these creations.

While we at Allvoices recognize that the context for each unique work of Banksy art is important for the complete appreciation of the work, we also realize that in many cases this art cannot be restored to its original location. Moreover, even if the art could be restored in-situ, it is highly likely that such art would subsequently be defaced by vandals or stolen by another party.

We believe it is a sad commentary on our society that selfish and destructive individuals would act alone to deprive so many people of the simple enjoyment of these unique artworks and we sincerely hope that those responsible will do the right thing and return these works immediately.

In addition, Allvoices is asking members of the Los Angeles and San Diego Communities as well as people in adjacent areas to photograph items that are either known or believed to be originally Banksy artwork so that we may collect and preserve the images as presented in their original context in the event that these images are later stolen or defaced.

Finally, we are requesting commentary from the community at large as well as from Banksy himself. We would like to get the opinion of the community on what is transpiring with these important artworks. If you're Banksy, or one of his official representatives, we would welcome your point of view. Further we would gladly give you a prominent position on the Allvoices website so that you can share your thoughts with millions of our readers from all over the world.

If you know of or are responsible for the removal and/or theft of a verifiable work of Banksy art, please contact us at Allvoices to discuss terms for the return of the art. If you wish to share your thoughts on this matter, please email us at the address below, or comment on the post associated with this open letter. Lastly, if you are Banksy, please get in touch with us so that we can provide you with a means of accessing our site so that you can easily post whatever messages you'd like to share with people that love, respect and appreciate your art.

Tips and information concerning the return of Banksy art should be directed to: savebanksy@Allvoices.com

Sincerely,

Allvoices Editorial Staff and Management

In this time of a severe recession, when schools are having to close music and art classes, we cannot afford the theft of art. It is needed to provide grace to our otherwise bland lives.

I, for one, commend Allvoices for taking this position and consider it an honor to contribute to Allvoices for that specific reason. Oliver I rated your report up and Kudos to Allvoices on the Open Letter.

Art tells us more about history than we realise and therefore we need to preserve and treasure it as much as we can.

While I detest the removal of art from the street, why is Banksy's work placed at a higher standard than any other artists. The street is an unfiltered canvass of the masses, and the removal, or buffing of any work should receive a similar response to this. Why do people think that Banksy is some sort of untouchable street art god when other artists who have been on their grind for far longer, and are much more relevant today, aren't given anywhere near the same recognition.

I don't think this is meant to mean he is untouchable. It simply focuses on him. Everyone tries to do what they can.

We covered all the drama during Banksy's trip to LA, including which pieces were taken and by whom (most were taken down by the owners)

Thank you to allvoices for being in the vanguard to save Banksy Art.

Personally, I learned of him through the movie "Exit Through the Giftshop" and fell in love with his Art and modus operendi.

Street Art to me is like looking at the Cave Art in France. It's the people's art representing what's really happening during that epoch.

Really? You want Banksy graffiti art, back....from it's illegal spot in which it was put? I love his art, however, the defacing of someone's property, store front or billboard is still an illegal act! If he were to put his art on any of my property, you better believe I would remove it and keep it as art, or sell it! Why not? He does it. Every artist sells their art at one point or another. Karma is a total bitch! Remember, you get what you give!
