Doo Wop singer Carl Rainge died March 6 in Columbia, Tennessee at the age of 74 after a long illness.
Born Parmaley Rainge in Gary, Indiana; he was the only child of seven siblings who showed any interest in music. His brother Rudolph said that Carl was always singing and that he could play the piano by ear.
Known as Carl, Rainge became a part of the singing group The Spaniels in 1956. The Spaniels had such hits as “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight”, “everybody’s Laughing”, “You’re Gonna Cry”, and “Peace of Mind”. Rainge was an off and on member of the group for 20 years. The Spaniels were inducted into the Doo Wop Hall of Fame in 2005.
When not singing with The Spaniels, Rainge had a number of jobs including as a bailiff in the Lake County Courthouse.
Rainge is survived by his daughter Linda, son Parmaley Keith, five of his siblings, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Rainge’s funeral will be in Gary, Indiana on Saturday March 20.
