Walmart, the retail chain that some love and others hate is planning to open new stores in hundreds of new locations throughout the US over the next few years. The new stores will be designed on a smaller scale and targetted areas will be rural, university campuses and urban settings. The first of the new Walmart Express stores are scheduled to open next week in Walmart's home state of Arkansas.
The announcement at an investors' conference in New York City today, was enough to push the share price for Walmart up by 30 cents per share according toBloomberg. The expansion of the retail giant continues through acquisitions as well.
In another effort to bolster sagging sales,Walmart is introducing is the Pick Up Today scheme whereby customers can purchase goods online and pick them up at a local store the next day.
The world's largest retailer had fairly humble beginnings. It was started in 1962 by Sam Walton who piloted the chain from a family operation to a corporation encompassing the world. Walmart can take on other names in other countries than the US. In Mexico it's Walmex, the UK Asda, Japan Seiyu, in India Best Price.
