The biggest carnival in the world, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro or Rio Carnival 2011 started on Saturday, March 5th and is set to conclude on Tuesday, March 8th.The world famous festival has two million people in attendance per day, and is held before Lent every year.
The highlight of the festival is the totally unique Rio Carnival Parade called the Samba Parade or Samba Schools Parade. It reviews the fierce competition between the Rio samba schools. Participating Samba schools include: Mocidade Independente, Imperio Serrano, Academicos do Salgueiro, Unidos da Tijuca, and Beija-de Nilopolis. The judges and spectators watch the principal parades in the Sambodromo.
The city of Rio de Janeiro also offers a diverse choice of Carnival balls. attendies can also enjoy the Carnival street bands for free as they play music in the streets. People can simply join in, drink and dance away.
