By the end of January 2011, the number of mobile phone users in India had reached to 77.11 crores according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of Inda (TRAI). Accordingly the number of High frequency Radiation spewing Mobile Cell Towers are being erected all over India indiscriminately in violation of specified rules and regulations by the mobile companies in highly congested Residential localities on Residential Apartments and even on age old structures without caring for the dangers and health hazards being faced by the public.
For instance, in the heart of Hyderabad city in and around the National Institute Nutrition located at Taranaka, Habsiguda, Nacharam, Moulali, Kapra, ECIL, Shivam, Chilakalguda, Seethaphalmandi, Vidyanagar, Shankarmutt and Amberpet areas the Municipal Authorities have given permissions for erection of high-frequency radiation spreading Mobile Towers, on Residential apartments, and Residential buildings, and even on School buildings.
In these localities one can see two to three Cell Towers on a single apartment that are erected without consent of local residents, which is a mandatory before erecting a cell tower on any building. Even low-levels of radiation from these Towers are causing memory impairments, neurological problems, miscarriage and depression among the local residents especially for students and women.
In spite of several representations by the residents of these localities, the Hyderabad City Mayor Mrs.K.Banda has never initiated any substantial efforts for removal of many cell towers erected without proper permissions and obtaining no-objection certificates from the local residents. So far frequent incidents of mysterious deaths of some people and frequent health problems are being reported from the residents of theses localities.
In reply to the public representations, the municipal authorities defend themselves by showing the Court stays against removal of such unauthorized towers. As a result of this public resentment is growing against Courts that are not showing any concern for public health instead postponing the actions, by showing technicalities in the litigations filed by the Cell Tower managements.
This is all happening because of connivance of Municipal authorities with the cell tower managements, where bribe plays major role in erection of mobile towers without heeding the public health and laws. Even the United Nations statements shows that any cell towers must be erected at least 300 meters away from the Residential localities. But who is there in India to care about the public health?
