VLADIVOSTOK - Russia will deploy cruise missiles, anti-ship and advanced air defense system on the Kuril Islands, including four islands controlled by Russia, whose sovereignty is also claimed by the Japan, reported Wednesday the Interfax news agency.
Russia are positioned anti-ship missiles and Yakhont will establish a missile defense system Tor-M2, Interfax reported, quoting an official of the General Staff of the Russian army.
Cruise missiles could be deployed on Iturup and Kunashir, two of the four disputed islands, which are important military sites.
A plan to strengthen the Russian military presence on the Kuril Islands, which presumably it includes the deployment of missiles and Yakhont system Tor-M2, has already been submitted to the Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.
Russia will continue to consolidate its military presence on the Kuril Islands, which it regards as a strategic region.
