50 gallons of lye spill Sat night near Tacoma

Approximately 8:30pm Feb 26, 2011, two freight trains in University Place, Washington sidewiped each other. The accident took place near the west side of the Chambers Bay golf course which is about 13 miles South of Tacoma in Pierce County.

Reportedly, 14 freight train cars ended up completely off the tracks, 2 cars from one train and 12 from the other. Some of the trains ended up by the bay. Hazardous materials which included sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, were being transported in some of the cars.

50 gallons of lye leaked out of one of the cars and by 3am Hazmat crews had sealed it and no threat to the public was reported. Although, local residents within one mile of the accident were asked to stay in their homes Saturday night.

The Coast Guard, Hazmat, and the Lakewood Police and Fire Department crews were on the scene.

Injuries appear not to be a factor in the accident.

The tracks have been closed since Saturday night--50 trains a day generally use the tracks, trains had to be rerouted.
