D8 summit adopts 25-point declaration

KUALA LUMPUR: Leaders from the D-8 group of developing nations have adopted an ambitious 10-year blueprint to substantially increase trade between their countries.

The trade agreement, to run from 2008 to 2018, details economic and business activities that member nations will pursue over the next decade.

The pact covers sectors from investment, agriculture, energy, tourism, transportation, banking and finance. Members agreed to simplify visa procedures for businessmen from member nations as well.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani urged the D8 countries to quickly implement trade and customs agreements aimed at promoting economic cooperation.

Gilani said early implementation of these agreements will give impetus to promotion of intra-D8 trade, which is at present only 60.5 billion dollars.

The D-8 comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
