Bahraini Protesters fired upon

Almost thousands of anti-government protesters in Bahrain had resumed in Pearl Square, which is the focal point of protests in the capital Manama.

Jubilant protesters had returned after riot police had fired tear gas and shotgun rounds before withdrawing the crowd. Reports say some 60 people probably were injured.

Earlier, reports had shown that the main Shia opposition bloc had rejected an offer that was made from the king to hold talks aimed at ending days of unrest.

In a statement which was made on Bahraini TV on Saturday Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa stated that "calm is needed at this time... for all parties to be able to present their opinions".
