Republicans lead by House speaker John Boehner are threatening to shut down the federal governement if they do not get democrats to go along with deep cuts in spending.
House Democrats fighting the cuts say the republican plan would kill jobs, worsen the sluggish economic recovery, and unfairly hurt the middle class and poor, who depend on programs like Food Stamps, and Medicaid.
President Obama has "threatened to veto the House GOP's measure funding the federal government," according to The Hill.
A government shutdown would close federal offices, send tens of thousands of government employee's home, stop Social Security checks and Medicare payments to doctors, close National Parks and government buildings, and cut off payments to those serving in the military.
The last time there was a federal government shutdown was in 1995, when then speaker Newt Gingrich faced off with former president Bill Clinton.
