The pirates are demanding $4 million (2.6-million-euro) ransom

Somali pirates had kidnapped a South African couple Deborah Calitz and Bruno Pelizzari 4 months back – the kidnapping took place off the coast of Africa as the couple was on their way to New Zealand to meet up with relatives. The pirates are now demanding US$10 million for their release.

The pirates have threatened to kill the couple if the money is not paid within the next two weeks. Even though the incident happened 4 months earlier and made headlines in South Africa, the relatives in NZ had not spoken publicly fearing that the pirates might hike the ransom amount if it was revealed that there were relatives living overseas.

The South African police are trying their best to rescue the prisoners but, such incidents on the high seas send out dangerous signals to all sea lovers that pirates still rule the waters and can harm anybody.
