The question is: Safeway, as the name signifies, is truly safe or not? One of the pharmacists at the store gave a pregnant woman, Mareen Silva, abortion pills instead of her regular prescribed pregnancy pills.
Mareen Silva is waiting in her Denver-area home to learn whether she will have a miscarriage or not, and whether her daughter will remain safe and survive this.
The media reported that Mareen Silva, 19, of Fort Lupton was given methotrextate last week instead of the prescribed drug. “For all this to happen now, it’s really overwhelming to know that I have to come home and sit and wait,” Silva told KMGH TV. The name of the drug she was prescribed last week was not disclosed.
The Safeway store where she was given the drug said it would pay her medical expenses.
Mareen Silva’s mother, Lynn , said she didn’t care about the medical costs, “I am just trying to make sure my daughter is going to be OK,” she told The Denver Post.
Safeway store’s spokesman said they are investigating the matter. The drug is also used for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and other autoimmune diseases. It wasn’t reported whether the bottle carried warnings of its dangers to pregnant women.
The Feminist Women’s Health Center Website said, “When used in early pregnancy, methrotrexate safely and effectively induces abortion 90-97% of the time.” Let’s see how this turns out for Mareen Silva since it will take several days and weeks to induce a miscarriage. The fetus could also be born with birth defects. We wish Mareen Silva all the best.
