Fourth February: Celebration of World Cancer Day

Today World Cancer Day has been observed around the world. The slogan for this year was: Teach children and teenagers to avoid UV exposure by being “SUN SMART” or limiting to sun exposures.

WHO estimates that around 84 million people will die of cancer in 2005-2015 if intervention os not provided. According to WHO, in 2008, cancer caused 7.6 million deaths. The top cancers that causes death around the world are as follows:

· Lung cancer (1.4 Million people)

· Stomach cancer (740,000 people)

· Colorectal (610,000)

· Liver Cancer (700, 000)

· Breast Cancer (460,000)

Every year on 4th February, World Cancer Day is celebrated to promote, prevention, treatment and early detection. The celebration is led by International Union against Cancer as World Cancer Campaign since 2005 in reaction to Charter of Paris 2000. The campaign emphasizes the following activities prevents 40% of the cancers around the world.

· Avoid smoking

· Eat healthy diets, walk and exercise

· Vaccines against viruses causing cancers

· Avoidance of over exposure to sun

In Nepal also, World Cancer day was observed today.
