It was a sad day for aspirants of the Indo-Border Police (ITBP). They had come for preliminary interviews for selection to the ITBP but lost their lives. The selection for 400 odd posts had been called off and there was frustration among the 100,000-strong group of aspirants who had arrived from far corners of the country.
The aspirants were returning and were travelling on the roof of the Himgiri Express train and were rushed under a low over bridge in Shahjahanpur railway station 130 Km from Lucknow. They had climbed on the roof and opted for roof travel since there was insufficient space in the compartments.
The angry mob later torched the train and burnt buses and other vehicles on the road. The rail traffic on the route was affected.
