London, United Kingdom, January 31, 2011 - Oscar-winning composer John Barry, who wrote the musical scores for several Bond films , has died at the age of 77, his family said Monday.
He died on Sunday in New York, reportedly of a heart attack, and is survived by his wife of 33 years, Laurie, four children and five grandchildren. Barry was best known for his association with the movies, scoring for eleven films.
, Barry's successor as the Bond films' musical score composer, described his death as a "profound loss".
Outside the Bond movies, Barry also won Oscars for "Dances With Wolves", "Out Of Africa" and "The Lion in Winter", and a couple for "Born Free"- best song and best musical score.
"Funeral arrangements will be strictly private and a memorial service will be held later this year in the UK," a family statement said.
Barry was born in the northern English city of York in 1933. His favourite childhood film was 's "The Adventures of ".
