On January 21, 1970, psychedelic psychologist and writer Timothy Leary was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of two marijuana joints in Laguna Beach, California.

Leary was extremely influential on the 1960's counterculture, encouraging the use of LSD, and advising people to "Turn on, tune in, drop out."

President Nixon labeled Leary "the most dangerous man in America."

In prison, Leary was assigned to work as a gardener. He escaped in September of 1970. Members of the radical left organization the Weatherman Underground smuggled him and his wife to Algeria, where they stayed with the Black Panthers.

In 1973, authorities ultimately captured him in Afghanistan. He was then placed in solitary confinement in Folsom Prison. California Governor Jerry Brown released Leary on April 21, 1976.

He died at the age of 75 of prostate cancer in his Beverly Hills home in 1996.
