Headaches, Migraines Easily Handled

At times we all get those annoyingly pounding headaches. Sometimes we even know what had brought them on. Other times they take us by complete surprise. Headaches or migraines whether incapacitating or less excruciating but still that bothersome headache, are most of the times are set off or made worse by triggers.

Here are some of the most usual pain agitators:

Stress and according to the journal of Cephalagia accounts for 80% of migraines. That is because that flight hormone keeps going up and down which can result in pain and nausea. Stress can also have you clenching your jaw bringing on neck pain. Meditation and yoga can greatly reduce the stress levels.

The weather can cause those who endure migraines to suffer more when the weather is hotter. Do your best to avoid hot weather by using fans, air conditioning, going out when it is cooler and the sun is coming down

A bad nights rest. Insomnia is linked with low levels of hormone serotonin. Blood vessels in the brain dilate and activate the trigeminal nerve, the main nerve involved with migraines. Cut down on caffeine, exercise and try going to bed and getting up at the same time each day

Overpower scents can do it. The trigeminal nerve has projections in the lining of the nose. When you encounter a menacing odor, the nerve releases substances that are involved in producing headaches.

Avoid using those strong smells that simply reek

As Gizmo said “bright light”. Bright light from the computer, florescent bulbs and even the sun can set off that nerve. Try soft incandescent bulbs, place a non-glare screen over your computer.

Daily food consumption. The foods you eat can cause a headache to come on. Foods that have amino acid tyramine like aged cheese, nitrates like hot dogs and amino acid phenylalanin like chocolate. All three can make the blood vessels to tighten and then expand causing that awful headache and even migraine. Drink water on a regular basis, eat regularly and attempt to find out which foods bother you if possible.

Over 29.5 million Americans endure migraines and most are women. Women have migraines three times more than men.

Some alternative treatments to rid yourself of that migraine

Biofeedback

Biofeedback practitioners use special equipment that monitors physical tension in order to teach the patient to control the physical processes that are associated to the stress. Once the patient learns the technique the equipment is no longer required and the patient will be able to use the technique

Chiropractic

There have been several clinical trials in which have shown that spinal manipulation therapy may aide in the treatments of migraines

In one study of people who endure migraines. After chiropractic care 22% had reported more than a 90% decrease of attacks and 49% had a significant decrease of severity.

In another study it was shown that spinal manipulation was just as effective as the prescription medicine as Elavil to decrease migraines. Researchers also located nine more studies which had indicated spinal manipulative therapy for tension and migraine headaches was just as effective as medications for them.

Acupuncture

A study from 2003 does suggest that acupuncture can be effective for migraines if it is done when migraine first begins and then it is as effective as migraine medications like Imitrex.

Herbs

Although there is no scientific studies to prove the effectiveness, these herbs are at times suggested to relieve migraines. If you take blood thinning medications or have bleeding disorders do not take these herbs

Dong Quai

Devils Claw

Ginger

Ginkgo biloba

Willow bark

"Easily handled?" Spoken like someone who has never had a Migraine. Migraine is the 12th most disabling disorder in the U.S. Headache disorders are responsible for nine percent of all US lost labor productivity. The US annual direct and indirect economic costs of headache disorders exceed $31 billion.

Easily handled? Do some real research before you write.

GO TERI!!

Not many people on the Planet Earth can speak to migraine like Teri Robert. She has spoken before Congress about funding for migraine research.

Migraine attacks are not mere "annoyingly pounding headaches". Only when you take away the headache does migraine suddenly make sense. The constellation of symptoms associated with migraine attacks apparently would astonish you, Debbie.

Please stop writing about migraine until you've looked at enough research, and spoken to enough migraineurs, to write an accurate article.

Wow. Not only is this a poorly written article, but it's also full of gross misinformation.

Try actually researching the disorder before you try to educate others about it.

This article is filled with such misinformation I don't even know where to start. Migraine are absolutely NOT easy to handle. Many people suffer endlessly despite trying every available option for treating their migraines, myself included. Even those who have them infrequently miss work and time with their families and suffer greatly. So you'll understand if I take your lack of research and flippant attitude a bit personally.

This is, by far, one of the most poorly written AND misinformed articles I have read about Migraine in a LONG time.

You calling migraine "easily handled" is one of the most ignorant and insulting things I have ever heard. How ridiculous my 36 years of chronic migraine have been-- if only my doctors and I had known that they were EASILY HANDLED.

Those of us that suffer with this disease do not appreciate your misleading and misinformed article. Yes, there are those that might helped by your suggestions, temporarily. BUT this does not mean it is "EASY", on any account. Mine are genetic. I personally do not believe one should publish about what he has little or no experience with. Much less does not do in depth research about the subject matter. I have suffered weekly with migraines for 20+ yrs. I have been a guinea pig for these years in my search for all and everything for relief. Please take time before you publish.

Wow! Your article is a terribly unjust to those of us who live with migraine disease and all that it entails. You seem to be misguided, ill-informed and just plain ignorant of so many facts. Migraine is anything but "easily handled" for many of us. Please look to the real experts in this field before writing any more potentially harmful articles on this subject. Those who suffer from frequent attacks can tell you that your article is pitifully simplistic and unrealistic. Sorry, but you've touched on a subject which is obviously out of your "league".

Easily handled? Are you for real???

I've had migraines for 24 years and there is nothing easy about them. I've tried so many medications, herbals, vitamins, etc. Not to mention the acupuncture, acupressure, massages, chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, aromatherapy, crystals, etc. I would try black magic if I thought it would help. All this and I am only 40 years old. More than half of my life has been robbed by these debilitating migraines.

You may have experienced a really bad headache in your life and THOUGHT it was a migraine. But until you have a REAL migraine or a life filled with them, you have no idea what it's really like. If you *had* experienced a true migraine, you would know they are most definitely not "easily handled".

It's articles like this that have people, including medical personnel, believing migraine sufferers can just pop a pill or take a nap and it will all go away.
Thanks.

Are you kidding me!! A headache and a migraine attack are not easily handled. By using the word migraine to mean the word "headache" you show a complete lack of understanding of what a migraine is-- a neurological disease that for some people are so debilitating to the point of paralysis on one side of the body. I have suffered with migraine disease for 21 years. My migraine disease wasn't identified for 16 years because headache wasn't the worse neurological symptom I suffered from. When I have a migraine it isn't a little head pain that goes away cause I pop a pill, its a three or four day ordeal.

Articles like this make it hard for us who do suffer from chronic migraines. WE know they are not easily handled, you write an article like this and people who don't suffer from them think this is all it takes. Drink some water and stay inside during the summer. You're adding to the ignorance of the public, which causes more stress on us. Thanks for nothing.

I'm even more irritated that this got a 5 star creditiblity rating. Who's rating this!?
Reply By dianaelee dianaelee | over 1 year ago
Could it possibly be the author, perhaps?
Reply By Stormlaughter Stormlaughter | over 1 year ago
Certainly not so rated by migraineurs.

I have been having chronic migraines for 4 years (from 2-15 migraines a month). I have been to 3 migraine specialists thus far. Under doctor's care, I have tried almost all of your treatment recommendations and I continue to have 4-8 migraines a month. Easily handled? Ha! You are grossly misinformed.
Posted By khilton khilton | over 1 year ago
Easily handled? For over 4 years I have been struggling with this disease. (You are aware it IS a disease, right?) For you to pass it off as if it were such a non-issue topic as a mere "headache" makes me so incredibly upset and angry. How dare you! You don't think we know all this already? You don't think we haven't tried these things? Did you manage to find a migraine specialist you could talk to? Did you EVEN try? Or was this info just gathered half-cocked over the internet? No. There's no way you could have even done THAT! Because EVEN the internet has better information than what YOU wrote in your ill-informed article. Do ALL of us a huge favor...stick to topics you know about. And if you do decide to write about something you have no knowledge about, for the love of god lady, INFORM YOURSELF!!!!
Posted By cyndeer cyndeer | over 1 year ago
Are you kidding me with this?!?! I mean, really, is this supposed to be serious? You obviously know less than nothing about this particular subject. Do yourself a favor and try to get some actual factual knowledge about the next thing you decide to pretend you know something about. This is insulting to anyone who has any actual experience with migraines, or has taken the time to become knowledgeable about them.
Posted By cyndeer cyndeer | over 1 year ago
Seriously?!?! No, really, you're not spoofing?? You obviously know less than nothing about this subject. Before you try to pretend you know anything about the next thing you decide to write about, do yourself a favor and get some actual facts. What an insult this entire "article" is! I signed up so I could leave a comment. My next step ... un sign up. With knowing what a farce this this, how could I possible trust or believe anything else you say?
Posted By migraine13 migraine13 | over 1 year ago
Hey Debbie - ever had a migraine???? If you had, this article would've never been written. I wonder - just how much research did you actually do on this subject???

Next time you want to delve into the Migraine topic, try speaking with people who suffer everyday & with the doctors who are working day & night to help alleviate their physical, emotional & social pains.

Thanks a lot for perpetuating the myth that a migraine is just a headache and not a MULTIFACETED DISEASE! Way to perpetuate the stereotype that we migraineurs should all just get over it already. And thanks for your apathetic attitude. Sorry, but you really p*** me off.
Posted By domestictech domestictech | over 1 year ago
If Migraines are so easily handled...Then why do thousands of us still suffer with the disorder? Sorry hun,but seriously, you need to do more homework before writing this kind of article. I can say I have tried most of those tips and if they worked life would be a lot easier and prosperous. I also grow so weary of these people who think there is some kind of a cure for Migraines. Trust me we ALL wish it were this easy. But,the truth is, it is NOT and I would not wish this burden on my worst enemy.

A very helpful report I must say. Can this also help a person who is suffering with Vertigo? If not can you let me now some tips about it?
Reply By khilton khilton | over 1 year ago
I hope she does more research on Vertigo for you Raul than she did on the topic of Migraine.

The author does refer to a study in one of the most respected scientific journals on migraine. But unfortunately a word after the word 'stress' in the third paragraph is missing, so we do not know what went together with stress in the study, and a reference to the original article is not included.

Sloppy proof reading, and sloppy handling of data. A pity, for we need info about migraine.
Reply By Stormlaughter Stormlaughter | over 1 year ago
Nobody needs this article's information. A good doctor, preferably a migraine specialist if possible, is the best starting point. Correct diagnosis is essential. Why treat yourself for migraine if a doctor sees that it could be something else?

Really, why self-treat without a doctor diagnosis? Migraine is absolutely nothing to treat on your own. It's far more serious than an "annoyingly pounding headache".

ZainRiaz also appears to be another writer for this site. You other writers need to stop trying to save a sinking ship. If you are going to critique, be honest. Not only was the information un-researched and sources were un-sighted if it was, but the grammar was horrendous!

Id love to see someone like this spend a week or more in my shoes I have been diagnosed over 20 years with migraines but the last 7 years have been very painful daily migraines. Just makes me mad when people print such dumb stuff. Ive tried things not even mentioned in her article. I could educate her lots. How could she think migraines are easily handled. Everyone is different too what works for some doesnt work for all of us.So do your homework next hun and do us all a favor dont write on something you have no clue about.

You people are such drama queens. My adopted sister used to go on and on about "migraines", but it was just a ploy for attention. It never fooled any of us. IT'S A HEADACHE PEOPLE - DEAL WITH IT!
