At around 7pm eastern time in the United States, on January 17, 1991, United States forces began bombing parts of Iraq. This started the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). That was 20 years ago today.

The plan was that with this aggressive initiative, President George H.W. Bush believed that Saddam Hussein would pull out of Kuwait and he would no longer be "a thorn in the world's side." Well, Hussein did leave Iraq, but in short order, he would rebuild the parts of Iraq that he wanted rebuilt and he would continue his tyranny.

Some people believe that if President Bush had gone further into the Gulf region and done more damage, then there would have been no "need" (note the quotation marks around that word) for the next President Bush (W) to go in in 2003. Nor, of course, would we still be there today.

Whatever your belief on this matter, it is safe to say that this date in history goes down as one that changed life in many parts of the world.
