The man shot and killed by Davis County officers this week may have wanted to die rather than return to prison. Cody Allen White,25, was scheduled to appear in a West Jordan courtroom on felony theft charges. The hearing was to determine if White was to stand trial in the matter. White had a history of drugs and theft charges and was awaiting a hearing for stealing a Chrysler 300 from a Sandy hotel and abandoning it in Ogden Utah.
Instead of attending the hearing, White of Ogden, Utah was in a Ford pickup truck that had been stolen. The truck idled in a Weber County driveway Tuesday morning. Officers saw the truck and began a high speed chase in parts of Weber County and into Davis County. Officers chased the driver for a mile before the truck went into a field and crashed into a ditch.
White ran from the truck and pulled a gun at the officers. The three officers returned fire. White was pronounced dead at the scene. He had a history of stealing cars. His aunt stated that he was despondent and had a history of depression and mental disorders. Shirley Allred, sister of White’s father who took his own life when White was only 5, stated that the father and son shared the same mental and psychological demons.
“He would have shot himself if the police didn’t shoot him, He was sad most of the time. He was depressed. He was searching He was a lost soul and he just really didn’t stand a chance.” Stated Allred. She had been in communication with White before his death. White emailed Allred the Monday before his death, informing her of his upcoming court date. Allred tried to meet with him, but he never responded.
