The governor of Pakistan's Punjab province was killed by one of his guards today. It has been reported that Salman Taseer, who was a well known political figure in Pakistan, was killed because of his opposition to the country's blasphemy laws.
The killing of Salman Taseer in the capital is being considered as the assassination of the most high-profile political leader in Pakistan after the killing of former Prime Ministerin 2007.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousufcondemned the slaying of his party's well-known member and has ordered to set up immediate investigation into the killing.
The suspect, identified asQadri, said that he is proud to have killed a blasphemer. The suspect himself confessed that he killed the governor, 56-year-old Salman Taseer, because he had called the blasphemy law "a black law".
After the life-taking attack on Salman Taseer, the attacker confessed his crime and surrendered his gun to police. Mr. Salman Taseer was a member of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and a close friend of President.
