La Familia drug cartel announced a one-month truce via a letter which circulated on Sunday, January 2, 2011 reports Fox News. In the letter, sent by email and in certain areas in person, the cartel claims it will stop crime-related activity during January to show that they are not responsible for acts the authorities are attributing to the cartel in statements to the media.

The message has yet to be authenticated, according to an anonymous employee of the Attorney General's office, however the government states that the drug cartel is weak due to many recent arrests and deaths of leaders. Just this past December of 2010, La Familia drug cartel torched vehicles across the state of Michoacan in an effort to block all entrances to Morelia, the state capital, after Nazario Moreno Gonzalez had been killed by federal authorities.

Although rhetoric used by La Familia drug cartel is that they defend Michoacan against other drug traffickers, authorities say that they terrorize the state with extortion, kidnappings, murders and drug-trafficking.
