Varanasi, India
A father named Kailash “Kalau” Singh who hails from the village of Chatay outside of the holy city of Varanasi, is reported to have lived for a period of 36 years now without taking a single bath in fulfillment of his vow to have a son.
Singh is 64 years old and father of 7 daughters. Madhusudan, one of Singh’s neighbors, says a seer told Singh years ago that he would be blessed with a son if he kept the vow of not taking a bath.
The culture in India handed down from generations is that a male child is a blessing to the family and that a female one is a burden. Sons are breadwinners. When they marry, girls have to give the matrimonial dowry to the groom’s family, including all earnings.
That’s why Singh is making good his vow not to take his bath until given a son, but it seems his efforts will not bear fruit.
