The chair lift at Maine's tallest skiing mountain, Sugarloaf, located in Carrabassett Valley, derailed causing skiers to fall up to 30 ft. onto a ski slope. It is reported at present that 6 people were injured while two were taken to the hospital although it is apparent that none of the injuries suffered to present are life-threatening. The chair lift, carrying approximately 220 people, had to be evacuated. It is not yet known if more people will be taken to the hospital nor is it known what caused the malfunction leading up to the derailment although high winds at the time had been reported.
Sugarloaf is surrounded by Maine's Western Mountains. The largest cities in Maine which are Portland and Bangor provide airport service and major metropolitan areas of Boston and Montreal are approximately four hours in distance.
