Los Angeles, California - 21 December 2010
Comedian and actorwant to run for Mayor of Los Angeles ... in eight years. Lopez made the big announcement on FOX's "Good Day L.A." this morning -- saying, "If can be governor ... why can't George Lopez be the mayor of Los Angeles?"
The 49-year-old comedian, actor, and talk show host is known for his stand-up comedy, where he usually examines race and ethnic relations, including the Mexican American culture. Lopez also stars in his self-produced ABC sitcom, "George Lopez" and is currently the host of the late-night talk show Lopez Tonight on TBS.
Lopez certainly has done a lot for the community. He has his own charity, The Ann & George Lopez Foundation (www.thelopezfoundation.org). He has received the Manny Mota Foundation Community Spirit Award and was named Honorary Mayor of Los Angeles for his extensive fund-raising efforts benefiting earthquake victims in El Salvador and Guatemala.
In February 2004, Lopez was presented the 2004 Artist of the Year and Humanitarian Award by Harvard University, presented by its president and dean for his artistic work and charitable endeavors.
On the personal side though, his 17-year marriage to Ann Serrano ended last Novermber when she filed for divorce. Celebrity website TMZ.com reported in October 2010 that the couple had separated citing "irreconcilable differences".
The hosts of FOX's "Good Day L.A." seemed unsure as to whether their guest was actually unloading a press release or pulling some legs. What do you think?
