The tortured body of a man who was executed and dumped in the Juarez streets is the brother-in-law of Marisela Escobedo, the Attorney General confirmed today. Escobedo herself was specifically gunned down on December 16 in front of the State Capital building in Chihuahua City as she was protesting the release from prison of the man who murdered her daughter. [See video, above which shows a gunman pursuing Escobedo across a busy street, shooting her in the head, then fleeing in a get-away car.] Escobedo is the activist who was known in Mexico simply as "Rubi's mother."
The latest victim in the family, Amparán Manuel Monje, 36, was abducted from his lumber business on Friday morning when a group of armed men burned it down in a four alarm fire. Escobedo's husband Manuel Monje, a business partner in the lumber yard, was attending her funeral at the time of the incident.
Witnesses said agents collected Monje's body immediately, even before news reporters could arrive, reports La Polaka news. With this new attack, there are now three people murdered in the Escobedo family. No suspect is apprehended or in prison.
On Saturday night Chihuahua State officials had released a press bulletin denying any relationship between Marisela, the lumberyard arson and the forced disappearance of Manuel Monje. The official statement reportedly appeared to attempt to erase any relationship between Marisela and her husband, as well.
Rubi Escobedo was 16 years old when she was murdered in August 2008. Sergio Rafael, her common law husband, confessed to the crime but was acquitted. (see video, above) Following Rubi's disappearance and the subsequent discovery of her corpse, that had been abandoned. dismembered and burned, her mother Marisela, a retired nurse, dedicated her life to seeking justice for her daughter as a human rights defender.
La Polaka reports that further criminal threats have been made against Escobedo's children. Escobedo's funeral was rushed in a vain attempt to circumvent further violent attacks.
