BP oil spill leaves deadly blanket on Gulf of Mexico floor

Fears of scientists over the BP oil spill are becoming evidenced in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Contamination from sunken oil is covering patches of the sea floor like black toxic blankets, smothering the ecosystem and threatening its delicate balance.

Sediment around the site of the BP blowout is showing high levels of toxins, according to data sited in the Wall Street Journal. “There is no practical way to clean up the spilled oil that has settled deep in the Gulf, officials said.”

During the height of the disaster, BP’s unprecedented use of nearly 2 million gallons of chemical dispersant came under fire from the EPA and scientific community, and in early May, just two weeks after the April 20, 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon that took eleven lives and marked the beginning of the disaster, the EPA ordered BP to stop using the dispersant for fear of long term environmental damage and risks to human health.

In June, under suspicion of a media blackout on the gushing Macondo well, the EPA did a sudden reversal on the dangers of the dispersant, issuing a report that claimed BP’s chemical was as harmless as ‘dish soap.”

The EPA turnaround, say whistleblowers, came in the form of pressure from the Obama Administration and BP officials concerned about the falling stock price of the oil giant.

By June 11th, 71 oil spill cleanup workers had been hospitalized in Louisiana, due to exposure to vapors from the toxic dispersant. On June 23rd, the US Coast Guard confirmed the death of two members of the cleanup crew.

This is a great report that I rated up. I had a feeling about that chemical dispersant. It is pretty scary how in the end everyone finds out about everything anyway. "The proof if in the pudding," so to speak.

A lot of people knew about it at the time but there was so much politics involved in the whole ordeal it was squashed. Thanks for your comment and the rate up.

There is a great deal of long term damage from the BP oil spill and I suspect the worst of it will be hidden from the public for years. The same thing happened after the Exxon Valdez spill. But the Gulf spill was much worse.

According to the Associated Press, Federal government scientists said on 12-17-2010 that "extensive sampling of the Gulf of Mexico seafloor found oil in quantities too small to collect and in concentrations below harmful levels, except in the area surrounding the BP well." AP reports that this "was a summary of 17,000 water and sediment samples taken between May and October."

They also reported that '80% of the oil had disappeared' before they were called on it later by scientists .. and then the govt admitted it was not true. the oil spill damage is still being under reported. Jut like when the disaster was gushing full force.. they didn't want to tell the public the truth because it would scare the &*#! out of them.

I believe this, look what happens to your driveway if you have a little oil spill from your caretc,so can you imagine that times a billion which was there for months, that plus all the contamination of ecosystem .I am also sure the health consequences on people especially those who worked will be similar to those poor people who worked on September 11 in some way with all the fumes etc.

This does not take a rocket scientist to figure out. yet BP and others who are just about profits would deny deny deny and get their lying corporate lawyers to do the same. I guess it is unsafe too eat fish in that part of the world.

Have a great day!

The problem is there is no incentive for these oil companies to change their ways. As long as they are allowed to get around the rules to make more money there are going to be more accidents. The planet can just take so much of this.
