As much as I would like to tell you that it is simply a fantasy of some non-descript science fiction writer, it is very much a reality. Cue Skynet and the Governator, the machines are rising.
US Cyber Command is a United States armed forces sub-unified command subordinate to United States Strategic Command. Basically the cyberspace arm of the American military.
Cyber Command is under the leadership of National Security Agency/Central Security Service Director General Keith B. Alexander, and went fully operational on October 31, 2010. A day that will in all likelihood live in technological infamy.
USCC is charged with overseeing several other agencies, including, The Joint Task Force for Global Network Operations, and the Joint Functional Component Command for Network Warfare. Seems the UN already has the framework for an international internet police force, at the ready. Whoda thunk it?
In fact, the agency's mission statement, embedded in their Emblem as an MD5 hash value ( that's geek speak for cryptographic protocol) is as follows:
"USCYBERCOM plans, coordinates, integrates, synchronizes and conducts activities to: direct the operations and defense of specified Department of Defense information networks and; prepare to, and when directed, conduct full spectrum military cyberspace operations in order to enable actions in all domains, ensure US/Allied freedom of action in cyberspace and deny the same to our adversaries"
There's been no word as of yet as to what exactly a "full spectrum military cyberpspace operation" is, but you get the picture. Pirates, hackers, phreakers, phishers and geeks beware.
Welcome to the New World Order.
