An unemployed Japanese, 27 year old Yuta Saito, went on a stabbing rampage on two packed buses on Friday injuring 13 people during the rush hour outside Toride railway station about 40 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.
A police spokesman Masaru Morita said Saito boarded one of the buses, wielded a knife and started slashing at least four people in a rampage that sent the other passengers into panic rushing to flee away from the crowded bus.
The driver of one the buses said at first he thought it was a fight among the students but a weird scream made him realized danger and he reacted by quickly opening the bus door to let the people out upon seeing the knife wielding man.
Kyodo News said seven high school and four junior high school students were taken to the hospital and the others suffered minor injuries.
A spokesman for the local fire department Shireka Iyoka said one of those injured in the attack required treatment that will take several weeks at the hospital.
The police has not yet established the motive behind Saito’s rampage.
