White House anti war protest

Today, in what was billed "the largest U.S. veteran-led civil resistance to war," hundreds of protesters took their demands for "Peace Now" to the fence of the White House. Police reportedly arrested 131 activists during the antiwar demonstration to "Stop These Wars" which culminated the Veterans for Peace gathering. Video coverage of the event by The Real News, found HERE, received accolades from one Veterans for Peace officer.

Among those arrested was Daniel Ellsberg, renowned military analyst who leaked the Pentigon Papers to the press during the Vietnam War era. Protesters attempted to chain themselves to the White House fence, but were charged with "failure to obey lawful order," a misdemeanor.

During the action the protesters also "delivered" postcards to President Obama, whom they said did not accommodate their request to meet with him personally to hear their grievances. The activists sailed the postcards over the White House fence, through the wintry Washington afternoon air. See video of the action HERE.

The protesters' rally at Lafayette Park this morning drew at least 500. Speakers attacked the war and defended WikiLeaks and Bradley Manning, the army officer suspected of leaking secret State Department cables to the website.

The list of those slated to speak, in addition to Ellsberg, included such notables as: Daniel Brian Becker, National Coordinator, ANSWER coalition; Peace Mom Cindy Sheehan, Peace of the Action; Ray McGovern, retired CIA officer and former U.S. Army Intelligence officer; Mike Ferner, president, Veterans For Peace; Diane Wilson, environmental activist and author of An Unreasonable Woman; Debra Sweet, Director, World Can't Wait; Mike Prysner, Iraq vet, cofounder of March Forward!, Medea Benjamin, co-founder Code Pink and others.

The event followed the directives of nonviolent resistance. Although noisy, it was peaceful.

The event flier reads: Take a stand for peace! Not another day! Not another dollar! Not another life! Peace on Earth? Mr. Obama, end these wars! Not tomorrow. Not next year. Now!

A web album of photos from the event is HERE.

There is hope for your country yet! It looked like a lot of older people there. They've shown the youth who end up as cannon fodder, the way. Get out there and demonstrate, peacefully. Get 100 000 there to sing and chant. For the authorities to arrest Daniel Ellsberg shows how far off track the rulers have gotten.

I always appreciate your perspective. From what I'm reading online, many of these protesters have been "walking the walk" for many years. Some of the most ardent anti-war activists I've known are former members of the military.

Wow simply amazing how the f*** is this possible

Instead of protesting in front of the White House, we need to protest in front of the mosques that teach jihadist philosophies.

Adrian,

Did you know that Muslim leaders are speaking out against jihad and terrorism on a regular basis? Because of the media bias in this country, we rarely hear about that. I agree with you that if mosques teaching jihadist philosophies can be isolated with certainty, a protest at those sites would be in order. But you will be hard-pressed to find such a mosque in the U.S. of A., despite what the warmongers want you to believe.

I have to admit that the Muslims I know personally in this country are among the most civil and kindhearted of all people I've met. On the other hand, I am frightened of Jhihad and Sharia. There are extremists in every religion --

In short, I agree, Punditty, that we must use our discretion to make distinctions.

I would have joined this march if I could. I agree it is time to stop these uncalled for and unnecessary wars.Wars breed more hate and do not solve problems especially with those who are not willing to change and do not want to change.

I salute these folks who are leading this protest.Yes people need to take a stand, perhaps the leaders will begin to listen.

Perfect,Rated up

Have a joyous day!

It is good to see that there is some spirit in the antiwar movement growing. This is one area where both right libertarian and antiwar leftists can be bi-partisan. Too bad Democrats as a whole and Republicans are bipartisan in support of the Afghan war and other interventions.

Thank you for the report Billie.

Veterens against wars is the most poignant voice we can hear.

And if those voices were in favor of the war, they wouldn't be poignant?

MidEastVet

I was speaking specifically about voices against war.

If your moniker is correct, and you are a vet in favor of the war. I am sure you are just as passionate as those against it. I don't devalue your position in any way by citing mine.

As you can see your anti/war protest did no good, you may have only got a notice by police as they took you off to jail. I can show you where to take your next protest against, in order to wake up the American People. But you all go a head and do it your way, or take your protest against this War to the Purdue Pharmaceutical Company, and I will show you a truth that is covering the net, I can not reach your friends in the streets where you are, this task is in your hands.
internet search of { Purdue Pharmaceutical Company/FDA and/ United Nations/ 9/11 Paper Trail }
and....Purdue Pharmaceutical Company is Officially linked to 9/11 Terrorist Attack ... and within the release of the Federal Act Security Card is a 30 year old link now news for the first time.
