Assange started living with his girlfriend in 1989 and they had a son named Daniel, After Assange's home was raided when he was charged with hacking in 1991 she moved out taking Daniel with her. A custody battled ensued and was not solved until 1999. I have not been able to identify Daniel's mother by name.
Daniel now 20 is a software developer based in Melbourne Australia. Although not in contact with his father for a number of years he has called for fair and apolitical treatment of him. That seems increasingly unlikely given the attacks upon Wikileaks, the cries from some for him to be treated as a terrorist or even killed.
Daniel also said he hoped his arrest in Britain wasn't a "step towards his extradition to the US." But evidence suggests that is exactly what may be intended.
Daniel expressed doubts about the potential sex charges against his father. He said he could not see how the Swedish prosecutors could possibly convict his father of the sex charges for which he was being sought. He said:"The behaviour of the Swedish legal system hasn't exactly been encouraging so far," He had doubts about whether his father could get a fair trial in Sweden and as mentioned earlier suspected that the charges were part of a plan to use Sweden as a transition country before his extradition to the U.S.
Daniel Assange also defended his father against claims his publication of some 250,000 US diplomatic cables could leave him open to criminal charges. He used the same argument that I have brought up many times. Daniel says:"If that is the case, then every single news outlet that has republished the cables or derivatives thereof is equally culpable,"
Daniel has kept his distance from the media and his father's lawyers say he has been subjected to death threats. Julian Assange's mother Christine Assange has told Australian media that her son Julian distanced himself from the family for their own safety due to his growing notoriety.
However Daniel wrote on his blog this August that he had "much respect for my father and his cause.""And these ridiculously ill-handled allegations of sexual abuse serve only to distract from the audacious awesomeness that he has actually done,"
