The Four day Joint Military excersies between United States and the North Korea started in the waters off the Korean west coast.

China has called an emergency meeting of six countries to ease tension in Korea over the North Korean's deadly shelling of a Southern island.

The North and South Koreas, the US, China, Japan and Russia are participating in the talks.

Proposed members of the six nations participating in the talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament should meet in next month.

The United States says these are defensive exercises designed to deter North Korea from launching further attacks across its border with the South.

Tension remains high with the US and South Korea undertaking joint military exercises the North has denounced as a provocation.

North Korea has condemned the exercises as a provocation.
